The network will crop it if you do not

Every feed has a shape it wants. Hand it something else and it decides what to keep, usually by taking the middle and discarding the rest. That is fine for a landscape photograph and ruinous for a screenshot with text at the bottom or a graphic with a logo in a corner.

Resizing first means you choose what survives. It also means the version people see is the version you looked at, rather than one generated on a server you cannot inspect.

The second reason is quality. Networks re-encode what you upload, and re-encoding an image that was already scaled badly compounds the damage. Sending a correctly sized file gives their compressor less to do.

The presets here are the standard shapes rather than a claim about what any one network wants this month. Those numbers change without announcement, and a stale spec on a tool page is worse than no spec, so what follows is what each shape is good for.

When to use a square image

Square goes wrong in the fewest places. It reads the same in a grid, in a single post view and in a preview card, and no layout has to decide which half of it to show. If you are posting one picture and you would rather not think about it, leave this selected.

It is also the right choice when the composition already points at the middle, like a product on a plain background or a face. Nothing at the edge is carrying meaning you would miss when the frame closes in.

When a 4:5 portrait is worth it

A portrait frame is taller than it is wide, so it takes up more of a phone screen as someone scrolls past. That extra height is the whole argument for it. The image spends longer on screen, and a reader spends longer with it.

The cost is that a portrait crop is unforgiving of wide photographs. A landscape shot squeezed into 4:5 loses both sides, which is usually where the context lives. If you plan to post vertical, start from a vertical original.

What a 16:9 landscape is good for

16:9 is the shape of video and of most computer screens, which makes it the natural frame for a screenshot of an app, a chart, or a cover image sitting above an article.

It is the weakest shape in a phone feed, because it is short. On a vertical screen a 16:9 image is a thin band between two blocks of text. Use it when the content is genuinely wide, not as a default.

When to use a 9:16 story frame

9:16 fills a phone screen top to bottom. It is the frame for anything meant to be seen full screen with nothing else around it, and it gives you room to stack a headline above the subject and leave the lower half clear.

Leave margin at both ends. Full-screen surfaces put their own buttons and progress bars over the frame, so anything placed hard against the top or bottom can end up under an interface element you never saw while designing it.

A profile picture and a banner want different things

The two slots on a profile page are not fed by the same file. A profile picture goes in square and comes out a circle, because that is how nearly every network draws it, so the corners are decoration and the subject belongs in the middle with room around it.

A banner has the opposite problem. It is wide and short, it loses its sides on a narrow screen, and on most profile layouts one corner of it sits underneath the profile picture. Treat the middle as the only guaranteed area, keep a wordmark away from the edges, and keep it away from whichever corner your network parks the avatar in.

What happens when you post more than one picture

An album is not your image at the size you chose. Networks lay several pictures out in a grid and cut each one down to fit its tile, so a set mixing a tall photo with a wide one comes back as two odd crops sitting next to each other.

Resize every picture in a set to the same shape before you post them. That part is yours to control, and it is what stops the one landscape shot in a run of squares from being the picture that lost someone's head. Look at the composer's preview before you press post, because the tiling only shows up there. The files on your disk give no hint of it.

What the 2:1 wide shape is for

2:1 is the usual proportion for a header strip or a link card. It is wide and short, and whatever is in it has to survive being cut off at the sides when a narrow layout gets hold of it.

Keep the part that matters near the centre and treat the outer edges as decoration, because the edges are what a narrow screen removes first. A wordmark parked on the far left of a 2:1 banner is the classic way to lose half a name.


Fill and crop, or fit and pad

These are the only two honest options when the shape does not match, and each costs something. Filling the frame keeps the image sharp edge to edge and throws away whatever falls outside. Fitting keeps every pixel of the original and adds bars to make up the difference.

Use fill for photographs, where the edges rarely carry the meaning. Use fit for anything with text, a chart, or a screenshot, where losing an edge loses information.

What fill and crop does

Fill scales the picture until it covers the frame in both directions, then cuts whatever hangs over the edge. The result is sharp corner to corner with no bars, and the pixels that left are gone from that copy.

The crop is centred, so plan for the middle to survive. If your subject sits off to one side, crop it yourself in whatever editor you already have and bring the result here for the final shape.

What fit and pad does

Fit scales the picture until all of it is inside the frame, then fills the leftover space with white. Every pixel of the original is still there, sitting smaller inside a larger canvas.

This is the setting for screenshots and charts, where an edge carries information. A white bar above and below is a much smaller loss than a cropped-off axis label or a missing last line.

The padding is white rather than transparent because the output is JPEG, which has no transparency to record. On a dark interface those bars will show, so look at the preview before you download.

Why there is no stretch option

What neither does is stretch. Squashing an image to fit a frame is the one transformation that always looks wrong, and no amount of resolution hides it, so it is not offered here.

Stretching changes the ratio between width and height, so circles turn into ovals and faces get wider or longer. Most readers cannot name what is wrong with the picture and all of them can see that something is. A crop is a decision you made. A stretch reads as a mistake.


Quality, and what a resize cannot fix

Resizing is a redraw. Every pixel in the output is computed from the pixels around it in the input, which means the operation can throw information away and cannot add any.

So the quality of what you download is set mostly by the quality of what you fed in. The largest original you have is the right file to start from, even when the target is small.

Can you make a small image bigger

You can set a larger target and the tool will draw one, and it will look soft. Upscaling has to invent pixels that were never recorded, and an invented pixel carries no detail, only an average of its neighbours. Sharpening afterwards makes those averages crunchier without making them true.

If the source is smaller than the frame you need, go back for the original file rather than enlarging the copy you have. A photo taken on a phone is almost always bigger than any feed will display, so the full-resolution version is usually still sitting on the device.

Does resizing twice make it worse

Yes, when JPEG is involved at each step. JPEG saves space by discarding information, and it discards a slightly different set every time it encodes, so a file that was saved, resized, saved again and then posted has been through several rounds of loss that stack.

Go back to the original for each new size instead of resizing a resized copy. Networks re-encode whatever you hand them, which is one round nobody can avoid, so it is worth spending the rounds you do control carefully.

What happens to a transparent PNG

Transparent areas come back white. The output here is JPEG and JPEG has no way to record transparency, so anything see-through has to be filled with something, and white is the fill that disappears against the most backgrounds.

If you need a genuinely transparent background, a resizer that writes JPEG is the wrong tool. Keep the PNG and scale it somewhere that can write PNG back out.

What quality 92 means for the file

The download is JPEG at quality 92, near the top of the scale. High enough that the difference from the source is hard to see at normal viewing distance, and low enough that the file uploads without a wait.

There is no slider for it because the setting that decides your final quality is the one the network applies after you, and that one is not yours to set. Handing their compressor a clean, correctly sized file is the part you control.


Nothing is uploaded, and that is checkable

Most free image tools on the web take a copy of your file. The resizing happens on their server, which means the picture you were only thinking about posting now exists somewhere else, under terms you did not read.

This one uses the FileReader and canvas APIs that every browser has had for over a decade. Open your developer tools, watch the network tab, and resize an image. There is no request, because there is nothing to request.

The practical consequence is that it also works with no connection, and that a large file does not mean a long wait for an upload bar.


Questions

What size should a Kick image be?

Square at 1080 by 1080 is accepted everywhere and is the right answer when you are not sure. A 4:5 portrait takes more vertical space in a scrolling feed, which is why it has become the default for reach. We do not yet publish verified per-network pixel specs, and we will not guess them, so the presets here are the standard shapes rather than a claim about what one network requires today.

Does resizing lose quality?

Making an image smaller loses detail you were not going to see anyway. Making it larger cannot invent detail and will look soft, so start from the largest original you have. The output here is JPEG at quality 92, which is high enough that the network's own re-encoding will be the first thing to visibly cost you.

Is my photo uploaded to your server?

No. The file is read by your browser, drawn onto a canvas element in the same tab, and returned to you. There is no network request at any point, so there is no copy of your image on our side to keep, leak or delete.

Which file types can I put in?

Whatever your browser can decode, which covers JPEG, PNG and WebP everywhere and usually more than that. What comes back is always JPEG. One thing to know about an animated GIF: the browser hands the canvas its first frame, so you get a single still picture rather than a smaller animation.

Can I choose which part gets cropped?

Not here. Fill takes the centre and there is no crop box to drag. If your subject sits off to one side, crop it first in whatever editor is already on your machine and bring that file here for the final shape. That is one extra step, and it beats a tool guessing which part of your picture carried the meaning.

Does it work on a phone?

Yes, same page and same code. The one real limit is memory, since a very large photo has to be decoded and redrawn inside the tab, and an older phone can run out of room on a file a laptop would not notice. If that happens the picture never left the device anyway.

Can I resize several images at once?

Not yet. This handles one at a time. For a batch, the answer is a real image tool on your machine rather than a web page.

What format do I get back?

JPEG. It is the format every network accepts and re-encodes to anyway. If your image has transparency, be aware that the transparent areas become white, because JPEG has no transparency to keep.
