Hootsuite vs GrowSocialelion, on the record

Both sides of the ledger
What Hootsuite does well
Ten networks natively, including Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, YouTube, WhatsApp and Bluesky, plus over 100 app integrations on top of the dashboard. (source, 2026-08-27)
Unlimited social accounts from the Professional plan up, so the number of connected accounts never drives the bill. (source, 2026-08-27)
Trend forecasting up to 90 days ahead and automated inbox workflows ship with Professional and above. (source, 2026-08-27)
Where Hootsuite stops
No free plan. The cheapest way in is $99 per user per month billed annually, and the 14-day trial caps daily posting at 10 to 20 posts per organization. (source, 2026-08-27)
Content approval workflows are locked to the Advanced plan at $399 per user per month. (source, 2026-08-27)
Advanced listening sits on the Enterprise plan only, behind a demo request with custom pricing. (source, 2026-08-27)
Closed source and SaaS only. Plans are sold per seat, so every teammate multiplies the bill, and there is nothing to self-host or fork. (source, 2026-08-27)
Who should stay with Hootsuite
If your channels are Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, YouTube or LinkedIn, stay. Hootsuite publishes to all of them today; those networks sit in our catalog as planned, not live.
If you need enterprise listening, SSO or compliance tooling, Hootsuite's Enterprise tier is built for that and we offer nothing comparable.
If you want a managed product with support staff and an SLA rather than a server you run, Hootsuite is that product and our hosted version has not launched.
Hootsuite has run social dashboards since 2008, and the enterprise checklist is complete: ten networks, over 100 integrations, listening, compliance, SSO. The searches for an alternative are about the bill, not the product. The free plan is long gone, entry is now $99 per user per month on an annual contract, approving a teammate's draft requires the $399 tier, and listening means a sales call.
GrowSocialelion inverts that pricing logic. The app is AGPL-3.0 and free to run, so neither seats nor accounts are billing units. Approval workflow is not the most expensive feature, it is the default: the agent proposes every post and reply, and you decide per action type whether a human signs off. What we do not have is Hootsuite's network breadth, and the table below says so plainly.
Asked before switching
How much does Hootsuite cost compared to GrowSocialelion?
As of 2026-08-27, Hootsuite runs $99 per user per month on Standard, $199 on Professional and $399 on Advanced, all billed annually, with no free plan. GrowSocialelion is free to self-host under the AGPL with no per-seat billing; its hosted version is pre-launch.
Is Hootsuite open source?
No. Hootsuite is closed-source SaaS with no self-hosting option. GrowSocialelion's entire app is AGPL-3.0 on GitHub.
Does Hootsuite have approval workflows?
Yes, on its Advanced plan at $399 per user per month. In GrowSocialelion, approval is the core safety model and lives in the free app: every agent action passes a gate you set to human, semi-auto or autopilot, per action type.
Which networks does each support?
Hootsuite publishes to 10 networks natively, including Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, YouTube, WhatsApp and Bluesky. GrowSocialelion publishes to 8 today (X, Bluesky, Mastodon, Telegram, Tumblr, Nostr, Lemmy, DEV) with 30 more researched in the catalog. If your networks are only on their list, that decides it.

Try the part that is already free
The hosted app is still pre-launch, so we will not pretend there is a signup. What runs today: the open-source app on your own server, and 500+ free tools that need no account, including character counters whose every limit carries a source, something Hootsuite's tools do not offer.
